Car-Free Cities: Lessons from Vienna for decarbonising Scottish transport — Transform Scotland eventDate: 10 October 2019 Location: City Chambers, Glasgow Organised by: Transform Scotland
For our AGM and speaker event this year, we are grateful for the hospitality of Cllr Anna Richardson for hosting us. The AGM will be held in Glasgow City Chambers from 18:30-18:50, followed by a speaker event from 19:00-20:15 and a drinks reception until 20:45.
We are delighted to welcome Maria Vassilakou, former Vice-Mayor and Deputy Governor of Vienna, and Councillor for City Development, Transport, Climate Protection, Energy Planning and Women’s Involvement. Maria also recently joined the Horizon 2020 project on Climate Neutral Cities.
Maria has been central to Vienna’s shift to public transport, walking and cycling over the last 20 years. By creating an affordable and reliable public transport network in a growing city, Maria has convinced car-loving Austrians to switch to public transport. Maria has also been instrumental in promoting green space in city planning to increase walking and cycling.
Following Maria’s presentation, we will have a panel discussion about how Scotland’s cities can put themselves at the forefront of the global movement for car-free cities and what lessons we can learn from other cities’ experiences of reducing emissions from transport.
