June Newsletter — Member Profile — Community Rail NetworkPublished 16 June 2020 by Transform Scotland
Community Rail Network supports and champions community-based groups that promote sustainable travel by rail and build positive links between local people and their railways. Across Britain, we now have:
- 71 community rail partnerships, working along a line or across a locality to promote awareness, use and involvement in rail, and feed in local insights to rail partners.
- 1,000+ station friends groups, trusts and enterprises, making stations into welcoming and productive hubs of which communities can feel proud.
Our role is to bring the movement together, share good practice, provide guidance, develop partnerships, and help new groups get started. We advise government and transport partners, including Transport Scotland and ScotRail, on putting communities at the forefront.
In Scotland, there are 10 community rail partnerships and scores of station groups, but we have been less active in supporting community rail’s development than elsewhere. Moving forward, we are keen to support community rail to step up impact, to help Scotland’s communities ‘build back better’ from Covid-19, and support the critical aims of Scotland’s National Transport Strategy, with its focus on sustainability, inclusion and communities.
We’re keen to hear from Transform Scotland members, with ideas on how we can work together and connect community rail with wider efforts on sustainable and healthy travel. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
